Engine Flares Revisited

I’m sure this one thing is going to kill me. I realised my intended approach is very similar to a toon-shader.

I need the effect to “roll off” based on the viewing angle. So I started tinkering with one to see what happened. I got close – real close – to a nice thrust flame effect. Not the volumetric “glow” I was after, yet nice for a engine flare.

But – there’s always a but – it won’t render consistently across all viewing angles and only looks good from certain directions – and my tired neural network can’t fathom out why. Sigh, back to the lab once again…
